CHENNAI:

Team India's newly appointed bowling coach, former South African pacer Morne Morkel, has officially joined the squad ahead of their two-match Test series against Bangladesh.

The series is set to begin on September 19 in Chennai.

Morkel was present at India's first practice session on Friday, September 13, after missing the recent Sri Lanka tour due to family commitments. The Indian cricket team, led by captain Rohit Sharma, arrived on Thursday night, with star players Jasprit Bumrah, Rishabh Pant, and KL Rahul spotted at the airport. Virat Kohli joined the squad separately, arriving from London early in the morning.

Morkel's appointment follows the departure of Rahul Dravid as head coach, with Gautam Gambhir now at the helm. Alongside the former pacer, Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate have been added as assistant coaches, forming a strong support team under Gambhir's leadership.

Replacing Paras Mhambrey, Morkel brings vast international experience, having played 86 Tests, 117 ODIs, and 44 T20Is for South Africa. His extensive knowledge of Indian conditions, developed through his IPL experience with teams like Rajasthan Royals and Kolkata Knight Riders, is expected to be an asset.

India squad for first Bangladesh Test: Rohit Sharma (C), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Sarfaraz Khan, Rishabh Pant (WK), Dhruv Jurel (WK), R Ashwin, R Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep, Jasprit Bumrah, Yash Dayal.
