Kendrick Lamar has been announced as the headliner for the Super Bowl 59 halftime show, but many fans in New Orleans are questioning why hometown favorite Lil Wayne wasn’t chosen. The NFL made the announcement on Sunday, following the success of Lamar's recent Drake diss track, "Not Like Us." While Lamar’s performance is highly anticipated, some believe the opportunity should have gone to Lil Wayne, given the Super Bowl’s New Orleans location next year.

DJ Akademiks voiced his opinion, stating, "Kendrick's a great performer... but Super Bowl 61 is supposed to be in L.A. anyway," suggesting the NFL could have booked Lamar for that event. Meanwhile, Master P praised Lamar as one of the best in the rap industry but also questioned why Lil Wayne wasn't picked. Adding to the reaction, Lil Wayne’s engineer expressed his frustration on social media, stating, “Confused. Disappointed. Angry. But most of all. Inspired. Will never again be in a position of having the 🐐 at the mercy of someone else’s decision.”

Fans echoed similar sentiments on social media platform X, acknowledging Kendrick Lamar's talent but expressing disappointment. One user wrote, "The NFL fumbled this one," while others called for Lil Wayne to at least appear as a guest during the performance, given his collaboration with Lamar on the song "Mona Lisa" from Tha Carter V.

Despite the debate, there is speculation that Lil Wayne could still make a cameo appearance during Lamar’s set, but many fans feel that Wayne should have been the main act for the New Orleans event.
