ISLAMABAD:

The Islamabad Wildlife Management Board (IWMB), on Friday, announced a major achievement in the conservation of the natural heritage of the federal capital, following the signing of the Islamabad Nature Conservation and Wildlife Management Act 2024 into law by President Asif Ali Zardari.

This new legislation marks a significant advancement in environmental protection and wildlife conservation within the Islamabad Capital Territory.

The Act grants the IWMB enhanced authority to oversee and manage the region's natural resources effectively. It establishes a comprehensive framework to safeguard the capital's unique biodiversity, ensuring a healthy environment for future generations, according to a press release issued by the IWMB.

A notable feature of the legislation is its provision for internal revenue generation, aimed at supporting the management of Margallah Hills National Park. The IWMB highlighted that this will enable sustainable resource management and the long-term conservation of the park's vital ecosystem. The Act also introduces realistic fines and penalties to enforce accountability and protect the environment.

The IWMB expressed deep gratitude to those who played key roles in creating this landmark legislation. Special thanks were given to the Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice Qazi Faez Isa, for his pivotal ruling; Senator Sherry Rehman, who tabled the bill in both the Senate and the National Assembly; and the Government of Pakistan for its support in passing and signing the Act.

"This legislation represents a crucial milestone in protecting Islamabad's natural heritage.

The IWMB is dedicated to implementing the Act effectively and continuing its commitment to conservation and environmental stewardship," the IWMB stated.
