ISLAMABAD:

Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) chairperson Senator Rubina Khalid on Thursday announced the launch of the Benazir Skill Training Programme for deserving women and their families while addressing the negative perception that the BISP is turning poor citizens into beggars.

The goal is to offer skill training aligned with local and international market needs, with certifications meeting global standards, to improve job prospects and socio-economic conditions.

She emphasised that similar social protection programmes exist globally. BISP currently provides dignified financial assistance to over 9.3 million eligible families. She said that in the past, 2,300 officials benefited from this programme, leading to legal actions against misuse. She highlighted that BISP has given recognition to poor women in Pakistan.

The programme has played a crucial role in empowering underprivileged women economically.

She refuted claims that BISP makes poor people dependent, arguing that state assistance for the needy is a global norm.

The programme provides additional financial support to meet the basic needs and expenses of eligible individuals.
