A devastating school shooting occurred at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, leaving 2 students and 2 teachers dead. The shooting happened at 10:23 a.m. on Wednesday, September 4.
According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the suspected shooter, a 14-year-old student, was identified as Colt Gray. Gray was taken into custody after being engaged by a school resource officer.
The school was put on lockdown, and dozens of ambulances were seen outside the school. A medic helicopter was also overhead. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp directed all available state resources to the school.
President Joe Biden released a statement, saying, "We cannot continue to accept this as normal. We are closely coordinating with officials at the federal, state, and local level, and are grateful for the first responders who brought the suspect into custody and prevented further loss of life."
Vice President Kamala Harris also addressed the shooting, calling the prevalence of gun violence in American schools "outrageous." She emphasized the need to stop and end the epidemic of gun violence.
The school will remain closed for the rest of the week. Winder is about 50 miles outside Atlanta.
