Issa Rae has said that Hollywood is facing an “identity crisis,” warning that progress in on-screen diversity is being undermined by shifting attitudes toward DEI and representation.

Speaking to The Wrap, Rae said the industry is experiencing a downturn in inclusive storytelling both in front of and behind the camera. She noted that although there has been progress in recent years, opportunities for underrepresented creators are once again becoming limited.

Rae, who first gained attention through Awkward Black Girl, said she created the series due to a lack of representation in Hollywood at the time. However, she added that the current landscape feels like a regression in some ways, with creators again having to fight to secure space for diverse narratives.

She explained that some industry executives of colour have expressed concerns about supporting certain projects, suggesting that the environment has become more cautious due to changing perceptions around diversity initiatives. According to Rae, this has made it harder to secure investment in projects centred on marginalised communities.

“You have to be smarter about how you package and market projects,” Rae said, adding that creators are often encouraged to frame stories in broader terms, such as class or universal themes, in order to improve their chances of being greenlit.

Rae also recalled early discussions around adapting Awkward Black Girl for television, noting that proposals included significant changes, including recasting key roles. She ultimately rejected the idea, saying it did not align with her vision.

Despite these challenges, Rae said her commitment to inclusive storytelling remains unchanged, though she acknowledged that navigating the current industry climate requires more strategic positioning of projects.

Her comments add to ongoing conversations about representation, funding and the future of diverse storytelling in Hollywood.
