Non-formal education in jail planned

Lodhran District Education Officer (Literacy) Dr Shazia Noreen has announced that the department will set up non-formal education centres in the district jail, where inmates will soon be provided educational facilities.

Addressing a seminar organised by the Punjab Literacy Department in connection with the International Literacy Day, she said 426 non-formal basic education centres across the district were educating about 13,000 students. She said the literacy department was also providing ample opportunities of education to the minorities and gypsies.

Dr Noreen stated that Lodhran was the first district in South Punjab to pave the way for educating the transgender community by setting up special literacy centres for them.

Additionally, women were being trained in ocational skills. She advised teachers serving in non-formal schools to nurture the creative abilities in students.
