Chidimma Adetshina, a 23-year-old beauty queen who recently withdrew from the Miss South Africa pageant due to xenophobic backlash, has been crowned Miss Universe Nigeria. Adetshina's victory in Lagos on Saturday night paves the way for her to represent Nigeria in the Miss Universe competition in Mexico this November.

Controversy surrounded Adetshina's participation in the Miss South Africa contest when questions arose about her nationality. Born to a Nigerian father and a South African mother with Mozambican heritage, she faced online attacks that questioned her eligibility. Miss Universe Nigeria organizers extended an invitation, recognizing her opportunity to represent her father's country.

Following her win, Adetshina expressed her joy and vision for a united Africa on Instagram, calling the crown "a call to action" for breaking down barriers and fostering a continent where every African can thrive.

Meanwhile, South African authorities are investigating Adetshina's citizenship status, prompted by concerns of possible identity fraud by her mother in 2001. However, Adetshina herself has been cleared of any wrongdoing.
