James McAvoy channels Andrew Tate for new role in 'Speak No Evil'

James McAvoy has revealed that his character in the upcoming film 'Speak No Evil' is inspired by Andrew Tate, known for his controversial views on masculinity. The film, directed by James Watkins, is a remake of a 2022 Danish thriller and is set to premiere on September 13. In an interview with Empire magazine, McAvoy discussed how he infused elements of Tate's persona into his role as the patriarch Paddy.

According to McAvoy, he aimed to portray a version of "West Country Andrew Tate," capturing the complexity of a man who outwardly attempts to redefine masculinity for others. He describes his character as someone who projects a polished veneer while challenging others with aggressive masculinity, saying, “He’s like, ‘I’m going to teach you what it’s like to be a man again,’ but with a polite face that isn’t quite Andrew Tate, enough of a sheen of, ‘I’m not one of those guys.’”

'Speak No Evil' follows a Danish family who, after bonding with a Dutch family in Tuscany, faces unsettling experiences during a visit to the Netherlands. The film stars McAvoy alongside Mackenzie Davis and Scoot McNairy, depicting a terrifying weekend at a British country estate.

McAvoy also shared insights into his physical and emotional preparation for the role. He referenced Australian ‘bogan’ culture and Mark Rylance’s character in 'Jerusalem' as influences. Despite his character's overtly masculine behavior, McAvoy added a layer of vulnerability, likening his portrayal to Ray Winstone’s character in 'Sexy Beast,' comfortable with his own imperfections.

This new role highlights McAvoy’s ability to delve into complex characters, exploring themes of identity and societal expectations of masculinity. The film aims to challenge viewers’ perceptions of traditional male roles through its intense narrative and McAvoy’s dynamic performance.
