Atletico Madrid secured a convincing 3-0 victory over Girona in their first home match of the LaLiga season on Sunday. Goals from Antoine Griezmann, Marcos Llorente, and Koke propelled Atletico to four points, following their draw against Villarreal in the season opener.
Griezmann broke the deadlock in the 39th minute with a well-placed free kick into the bottom corner after Girona goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga was penalised for handling the ball outside the box. Reflecting on the goal, Griezmann said he spotted a gap at the far post and aimed for it, with luck on his side.
Llorente extended the lead shortly after halftime with a powerful long-range strike following a solo run. Griezmann praised Llorente for his consistent commitment to the team, regardless of his position on the field.
Captain Koke, who entered the game in the second half, completed the rout in stoppage time with a tap-in from a Llorente cross, marking his first goal since the 2021-22 season.
Girona midfielder Oriol Romeu acknowledged that the timing of Atletico's goals hurt his team but noted some positives in their performance, despite the heavy defeat.
Atletico Madrid now turn their attention to their next fixture, hosting newly promoted Espanyol on Wednesday, while Girona will face Osasuna a day later. Griezmann emphasised the need for continued effort and focus in both training and matches to maintain their positive momentum.
