The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) responding to a request of Sindh School Education and Literacy Department (SELD), has provided records of school teachers from Shaheed Benazirabad living abroad.
SELD officials told The Express Tribune that the department has initiated action against these absentee teachers.
SELD has once again pointed out the existence of over 6,300 ghost teachers, requesting Education Minister Sardar Ali Shah to take action against them.
SELD Monitoring Director General had sent a summary to the Education Secretary regarding the ghost teachers working at the department, who forwarded it to the minister for appropriate action.
The summary states that many teachers are receiving salaries while sitting at home, and some retired employees are also receiving salaries and benefits. The summary recommends suspending the IDs and salaries of the turrant teachers besides pursuing legal action against them.
The issue of ghost teachers is decades old. Many people get employment as political gratification, getting free taxpayers money. These teachers, as invisible as ghosts, get all the job benefits yet do nothing. Being well-connected, the department cannot take action against them.
The SELD Monitoring wing's summary stated that many of these permanently absent teachers had traveled abroad, prompting the department to take action against long-term absentees. The department reported that it has requested records from the FIA regarding teachers traveling abroad against regulations. According to the department, the FIA has provided records of absentee teachers from Shaheed Benazirabad who traveled abroad. Based on the FIA report, action has begun against them.
