Joshua Malina and his wife of nearly three decades, Melissa Merwin, are divorcing. According to documents obtained by PEOPLE, Merwin filed for divorce on August 2 in Los Angeles, citing irreconcilable differences.

The filing did not specify the couple's date of separation but noted that they were married in 1996 and have no minor children. The couple shares two adult children: 22-year-old Avi and 26-year-old Daisy. Merwin’s filing also indicates that she will seek spousal support from Malina.

The couple has kept their relationship largely private. However, Malina publicly celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary in 2021 with a black-and-white photo from their 1996 ceremony, captioned, "I married this knockout 25 years ago today! đź’•."

Melissa Merwin has a background in the entertainment industry as a costume designer for several movies in the 1990s, including "Bad Girls," "Point of No Return," and "Fallen" starring Denzel Washington. Her Instagram bio describes her as a "flowering freelancer."

Joshua Malina is best known for his roles as Will Bailey on "The West Wing" and U.S. Attorney General David Rosen on "Scandal." Last year, he returned to Broadway with a starring role in "Leopoldstadt." This fall, Malina will make his stage debut in London with "What We Talk About When We Talk About Anne Frank," running from October 4 to November 23 at the Marylebone Theatre.
