Andrea Bocelli has invited Timothée Chalamet to attend one of his opera concerts after the actor faced criticism over comments about ballet and opera.

Chalamet made the remarks during a discussion hosted by Variety and CNN with Matthew McConaughey last month. While discussing the future of cinema, the actor appeared to question the public’s interest in certain performing arts.

“I admire people (saying), 'Hey, we gotta keep movie theatres alive. We gotta keep this genre alive,” Chalamet said during the discussion. “I don't want to be working in ballet or opera or things where it's like, 'Hey, keep this thing alive, even though no one cares about this anymore.'”

He later added: “All respect to the ballet and opera people out there... Damn, I just took shots for no reason.”

The remarks prompted criticism online and from some members of the performing arts community. Bocelli addressed the comments in an interview with People, saying he was surprised by the remarks from another artist.

“I believe we often tend to keep our distance from what we have not yet truly encountered. Opera and ballet are art forms that have crossed centuries and continue to speak to the human heart, because they answer a deep need for beauty, truth, and emotion,” the Italian tenor said.

“They are not arts of the past, but living languages that can still move us, make us reflect, and bring different generations together.” Bocelli also extended an invitation to Chalamet to attend one of his performances.

“I am convinced that a sensitive performer like Timothée, who understands the power of emotions, may one day discover that opera and dance draw from that very same source,” he said.

“Should he ever be curious, I would be happy to welcome him as a guest at one of my concerts.”

Chalamet has not publicly responded to Bocelli’s invitation. The actor is scheduled to attend the 2026 Academy Awards, where he has been nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his performance in Marty Supreme.
