Arsenal have received a significant boost in their pursuit of Mikel Merino, as the Spanish midfielder appears to have chosen to join the Gunners instead of Barcelona.

Merino is reportedly awaiting the finalisation of a deal with Arsenal ahead of the upcoming season. Throughout the summer, reports have indicated that Merino is Arsenal's primary midfield target, with a potential transfer fee of up to £30 million.

According to Mundo Deportivo, the 28-year-old is leaning towards a move to the Emirates, despite interest from Barcelona, where the new manager, Hansi Flick, is said to be an admirer. Arsenal's manager, Mikel Arteta, is keen to bring Merino on board to strengthen the team's midfield.

Choosing Arsenal over Barcelona signals a recognition of Arsenal's progress under Arteta. The appeal of playing in the Premier League, coupled with the promise of a title challenge and Champions League football, likely contributed to Merino's decision.

Last season, Merino made 45 appearances for Real Sociedad, who finished fifth in La Liga. He scored eight goals and provided five assists, showcasing his value as an experienced international player with 28 caps for Spain.
