KARACHI:

Instead of earing a promotion, a pay raise, or a commendation, Mirza Akhlaq Baig, the KWSC officer who unearthed the biggest water theft in the metropolis, has been suspended, leaving the officials of water corporation bewildered over the administration's priorities.

According to the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) sources, Baig had exposed the persons stealing water worth millions of rupees.

Sources said that the water mafia threatened Baig with dire consequences after he refused their bribe offer to shut down the water theft inquiry.

Baig's revelation had hit headlines in the media and caused substantial embarrassment for the Sindh government. His suspension has created fears among other honest officers of KWSC.

According to officials, there is allegedly a system operating within the corporation that works to push the honest officers to sidelines. The suspension orders were issued after the intervention of the Anti-Theft Cell and the Engineering Department.

Repeated attempts to reach out to the managing director of the corporation failed as he did not return the call.
