Tiffany Haddish thinks it’s “beautiful” that Zimbabwe has grocery stores

A video of the actor in a Zimbabwe grocery store stirred debate on African stereotypes.

American comedian and actress Tiffany Haddish has sparked online discussion after posting a video of her shopping at a grocery store in Harare, Zimbabwe. 

In the video, Haddish expresses her surprise at finding a large store in Africa, stating, “Look at the grocery store. They have a grocery store. It is beautiful,” and describing the store as “humongous.” 

Her reaction included delight at finding items like sugar cane, and she commented, “In Africa, baby. Believe it!”

The video prompted mixed reactions on social media. Some users expressed surprise at Haddish's reaction, with one joking, “Tiffany Haddish, the first woman to discover a grocery store in Africa.” 

Others questioned whether she believed there were no food stores on the continent. “In 2024, Americans still think Africans eat from the trees and live in caves,” remarked one commenter on X.

Supporters of Haddish argued that her reaction was intended to challenge stereotypes about Africa. One fan noted, “Thank you for coming to Zimbabwe. We like that you like our grocery store and all the products that shocked you are just basics here as well.” 

Another defended Haddish, suggesting her video was aimed at dispelling misconceptions about Africa, stating, “Some people think she’s dissing Zimbabwe with her comic grocery store tour. Nothing could be further from the truth.”
