US Vice President Kamala Harris assured key Democratic donors on Friday that the party is poised to win the upcoming presidential election, despite growing calls from lawmakers for President Joe Biden to step down.
"We will win this election," Harris affirmed during an urgent call organized to calm donor anxieties, according to a participant. "We know which candidate in this election puts the American people first: Our president, Joe Biden."
The call followed Biden's pledge to continue his 2024 campaign and the Democratic Party's plan to accelerate his nomination. On the same day, at least nine Democratic lawmakers publicly urged Biden to exit the race.
Reuters reported that several of Biden’s fundraising events had been delayed, with multiple Democratic sources indicating donors were threatening to withhold contributions. Donors were invited to the 30-minute briefing to address "urgent, emerging needs," according to an invitation obtained by Reuters.
Harris joined the call "at the direct request of senior advisers to the president," confirmed by multiple sources familiar with the situation.
