The father of an inmate who died under mysterious circumstances in Rawalpindi's Adiala Jail has filed a murder charge against the jail authorities, police said on Monday.
Shahid Bhatti, the father of 22-year-old Shahwaiz Bhatti, who was in judicial remand for murder, lodged a complaint at the Saddar Beroni Police Station. He alleged that his son was killed by jail staff in collusion with opponents.
“My son, who was transferred to Adiala Jail on June 10 on judicial remand, had a dispute with another inmate named Saim a few days ago,” Bhatti stated.
On July 8, Bhatti received a call informing him of his son’s deteriorating health. He rushed to District Headquarters Hospital Rawalpindi, only to find his son’s lifeless body.
“I am convinced that the jail administration, in cahoots with his rivals, murdered my son. When I visited him on July 4, the jail staff initially refused access. After my persistence, they allowed a brief meeting during which my son revealed he had been confined to solitary and feared for his life,” Bhatti added.
Police have registered a murder case and initiated an investigation. Meanwhile, a judicial inquiry and post-mortem of the deceased have been ordered to determine the cause of death.
