Amid an intense heatwave, incidents of electrical short circuits and fires have risen considerably in Hyderabad.
In the past day alone, multiple incidents of fires have resulted in huge financial losses.
Moreover, the Hyderabad Electric Supply Company (HESCO) pole mounted tansformers (PMTs) are also blowing up due to overheating as demand for electricity surges many fold.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), Monday recorded a scorching peak temperature of 40 degrees Celsius accompanied by 55% humidity, causing widespread discomfort and skin burns among residents.
The Fire Brigade responded to several fire incidents attributed to short circuits. Old and dilapidated wirings heat up and the insulation melts down causing short circuit.
In Pretabad near Ghousia Mosque, a blaze erupted on the upper floor of a residential building, engulfing a room. Firefighters managed to contain the fire but not before it had gutted everything in the room causing substantial losses.
Similarly, at Plaza Mehran Heights in Latifabad Unit No 6, a fire broke out at a union office, destroying furniture and electrical appliances. The Fire Brigade prevented the blaze from spreading further.
In Daman Kohsar, a fire ravaged a house, resulting in huge losses to furniture and valuables despite firefighters' timely response.
The recent heatwave has also intensified issues with HESCO transformers malfunctioning and catching fire across the city. The extreme temperatures have strained these essential components, leading to multiple incidents of oil spillage and ground ignition.
On Monday, a transformer in Kahkshan Housing Society, Qasimabad, sparked a fire, causing oil to spill and ignite the surrounding area. Despite early alerts from locals, HESCO officials faced delays in their response, exacerbating the situation.
