Prince Harry finds support amid controversy over Pat Tillman Award

Past recipients of the Pat Tillman Award support Prince Harry, despite criticism over his selection by ESPN.

Prince Harry has gained support from past recipients amid the controversy over ESPN’s decision to honour him with the Pat Tillman Award for Service.

According to TMZ, Jake Wood, a former U.S. Marine and 2018 award winner, supports Harry's selection, citing his military service, two tours in Afghanistan, and dedication to veterans. 

The controversy arose when Pat Tillman’s mother, Mary Tillman, criticised ESPN for choosing Harry, calling him "controversial and divisive." ESPN personality Pat McAfee echoed her views, suggesting the network sought controversy for ratings.

However, Israel Del Toro Jr., a 2017 award winner, praises Harry's work with wounded veterans through The Invictus Games, which Harry founded. ESPN insists Harry was chosen for his contributions to veteran support, not publicity.

While Wood respects Mary Tillman’s perspective, he and Del Toro believe Harry’s service merits the award. Despite being the first celebrity recipient, Harry's military background makes him a fitting choice.
