O.J. Simpson was featured in the “In Memoriam” segment at the 2024 BET Awards on Sunday night, a decision that surprised some attendees.

The audience had been clapping as photos were displayed during the montage. However, when Simpson's image appeared on screen, labeled as “Former NFL Player,” a discernible hush fell over the crowd.

A beat later, there was a smattering of applause, but many in the audience seemed surprised to see his face, one attendee noting some laughter and whispers among the crowd.

The “In Memoriam” segment also featured several notable figures, including Bill Cobbs, Carl Weathers, Willie Mays, Clarence Avant, Maurice Hines, Richard Roundtree, Ron Cephas Jones, Rudolph Isley, Irish Grinstead of the group 702, Louis Gossett Jr., 2 Live Crew rapper Brother Marquis, and civil rights activist Dexter Scott King.

Besides being a college football star who became a professional athlete, Simpson was also an actor, best known for his role in the Naked Gun franchise.

However, his legacy will always be marred by the accusations of murdering his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ronald Goldman. This case gained widespread attention due to a high-profile televised car chase and trial, in which he was ultimately acquitted of the murder charges.

O.J Simpson died in April of this year at the age of 76.
