Alicia Vikander, known for her Oscar-winning performance in "The Danish Girl," is set to bring a lesser-known historical figure to the forefront in the new drama "Firebrand." Vikander portrays Catherine Parr, the sixth and final wife of the infamous King Henry VIII, in a role she hopes will illuminate Parr's resilience and intelligence.
In an interview on the "Just for Variety" podcast, Vikander admitted she was initially unfamiliar with Parr's story, having primarily focused on the king's wives who met tragic ends. However, she quickly recognized the importance of highlighting the woman who not only survived Henry's reign but also outlived him.
Vikander shared a memorable rehearsal with co-star Jude Law, who underwent a dramatic transformation to embody the aging and ailing king. She recounted the initial focus on Law's elaborate costume, ensuring his mobility, but also noted how he inhabited the character's essence.
"Firebrand" delves into the palace intrigue and domestic abuse Parr endured. Vikander emphasizes Parr's strategic navigation of her dangerous marriage, recognizing the need to "justify her existence" and form a relationship with the king to survive.
In her personal life, Vikander reveals her passion for home design, often turning to HGTV for relaxation after intense filming days. She shares a home with her husband, actor Michael Fassbender, and their young son.
The couple, who met while filming "The Light Between Oceans" in 2014, will reunite on screen in the upcoming thriller "Hope." This marks their first collaboration since their on-screen marriage and real-life wedding in 2017. Vikander notes that after "Hope," they've received more offers to work together.
