Ashanti recently shared the story of how she revealed her pregnancy to her fiancé, Nelly, during an interview with Entertainment Tonight. Despite a viral performance in December 2023 where Nelly rubbed Ashanti's belly onstage at the Black and White Ball in St. Louis, the singer stated that they were unaware of her pregnancy at that time. "When he blurted that out on stage, we actually did not know. I hadn't even taken a test at that time," Ashanti explained, noting she was merely adjusting a pendant on her dress.
After missing a period, Ashanti began to suspect she was pregnant and confirmed the news with a test. She shared the happy news with Nelly via FaceTime. "I couldn't wait, [I] had to get it out," Ashanti said. "And he was just like, 'Oh I knew.'" She described the moment as filled with happiness and laughter, recounting, "He was so happy and we were both smiling and it was so funny. I was actually at his mom's house. He was in the studio. It was a really cool moment. It was a little bit of everything."
On Mother's Day, Ashanti posted photos on Instagram of herself with Nelly and their families, showcasing her growing baby bump. "This Mother’s Day was so special," she captioned the post. "Having our families together as we are about to embark on such an incredible journey was amazing. Wishing all of the amazing Moms and Moms to be a beautiful Mother’s Day...!!!!"
Ashanti humorously acknowledged the delay in her Mother's Day message, writing, "Yeah yeah I know I’m late… it was so much food I got distracted."
In April, Ashanti and Nelly announced they were expecting their first child together. The news was confirmed in a video Ashanti shared on Instagram, where she responded to her mother’s question about how much time she needed before a performance with, "Uh, I'm gonna need about nine months," prompting a surprised reaction from her mother.
