RAWALPINDI:

Ahead of Eidul Azha, the Rawalpindi Waste Management Company (RWMC) has made arrangements to collect and dispose of more than 9,000 tonnes of offal over the three-day Eid period.

The offal will be buried in four large trenches at the Loser Dumping Point. A day before Eid, the city will be transformed into a zero-waste area. The removal and relocation of debris has been termed a mega clean-up operation, which will incur an expenditure of Rs30 million.

Chairman RWMC Saqib Rafiq and Member of Punjab Assembly Raja Muhammad Haneef held a press conference to announce that biodegradable bags will be utilised to collect offal, which will decompose within three to six months. Additionally, citizens will be provided with bags to collect offal resulting from their sacrificial rites. He further urged the public to cooperate with RWMC and not to dispose of offal by washing it down the drains.

The comprehensive cleaning operation will encompass five tehsils, including Rawalpindi city, and 76 union councils in Murree. Chairman RWMC announced that 3,832 workers will be engaged in the operation, working tirelessly until the third day of Eid.

The cleaning operation will utilise a total of 485 vehicles, 18 permanent and 43 mobile transfer stations. In addition, three awareness camps will be set up at Committee Chowk, Sixth Road Commercial Market, five tehsils and Murree. The RWMC Control and Monitoring Room, accessible through a dedicated Helpline Mobile App, will operate 24/7.
