New unit launched to tackle traffic woes

A new dedicated unit, the "Traffic Response Unit," has been officially launched to address traffic jams in Lahore. Comprising 50 heavy bikes and 100 wardens, the unit aims to ensure smoother traffic flow and respond swiftly to congestion issues.

The launch event at Manawan Traffic Police Lines included a formal briefing by Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Ammara Athar.

The unit's members will be equipped with body cameras and use Google mapping to identify and resolve traffic flow problems.

CTO Ammara Athar explained that the Traffic Response Unit would be deployed at points where traffic jam complaints are received, particularly through the emergency helpline 15.

Additionally, the unit is connected to the Punjab Safe City Authority's (PSCA) cameras and a newly established traffic monitoring unit at the PSCA headquarters.

These resources will provide real-time information on traffic congestion and enable quick responses.

In addition to managing traffic and enforcing rules, the wardens will carry first aid kits and act as first responders in case of accidents. The unit will primarily use a public address system to issue warnings instead of issuing challans.

Two days before the event, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif had announced the unit's launch.
