SEPRA to cut power tariff in province, says energy minister

Sindh Electric Power Regulatory Authority (SEPRA) will be a fully authorised of power generation-distribution and transmission in the province, said Energy Minister Nasir Hussain Shah.

SEPRA will be the first autonomous provincial organisation in the country which will make its own decisions instead of the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA).

He expressed these views presiding over an awareness meeting held in the Sindh Energy Department's office regarding the SEPRA legislation. Energy Secretary Mossadiq Ahmed Khan and NEPRA Member Rafiq Ahmed Sheikh were also present.

Nasir Shah said the purpose of setting up SEPRA Board is to provide cheap electricity to the people. The SEPRA tariff will offer 30 to 40 per cent discount, Nasir Shah said.

Minister said that due to the simplification of electricity tariff issues, facilities will be provided to the public. Nasir Shah said that the plan to establish a mini-grid station in every district in the entire province is under consideration.

Minister said that the board members of SEPRA will be selected on merit and in a transparent manner, while the members and parts of the board will be experienced and capable personalities. Nasir Shah said after SEPRA establishment electricity distribution companies will not have to go to NEPRA.

Energy Secretary Mossadiq Ahmed Khan and NEPRA Member Rafiq Ahmed Sheikh gave a detailed briefing on the energy sector to the minister and he also asked various questions regarding the laws.

Minister said that according to the vision of Chairman Bilawal Bhutto, "we are with every decision that can provide relief to the people and welfare of the people and fully support every institution or project which is in accordance with the hopes and aspirations of the people."
