Despite its 1998 release, "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" remains vivid in people's memories and on their playlists...
This record stands as the sole solo studio album from American singer-songwriter and rapper Lauryn Hill, hitting shelves on August 25, 1998, via Ruffhouse Records and Columbia Records.
With its blend of neo soul and R&B, 'Miseducation' incorporates elements of hip hop soul and reggae. Its lyrics delve into Hill's pregnancy, the discord within her previous group, the Fugees, and explores themes of love and spirituality.
The album's title drew inspiration from the movie and autobiographical book "The Education of Sonny Carson," as well as from Carter G. Woodson's work, "The Mis-Education of the Negro."
"The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" takes the No. 1 spot on Apple’s best albums list
Last month, Apple Music's 100 Best Albums list revealed its top 10 albums ever, with "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" claiming the coveted No. 1 spot.
“This is my award,” Hill expressed to Apple Music, “but it’s a rich, deep narrative, and involves so many people, and so much sacrifice, and so much time, and so much collective love.”
The album celebrated its 25th anniversary last year, marking a quarter-century since its release. It achieved tremendous success upon its debut, earning five Grammys, three American Music Awards, and accolades from Billboard, Soul Train, and the MTV Video Music Awards. Additionally, it has sold 30 million copies to date.
However, rather than capitalizing on her success, Hill became one of the music industry's most intriguing mysteries. Following an MTV Unplugged acoustic album, her output dwindled, with only occasional singles and infrequent appearances.
Lauryn Hill married Bob Marley's son Rohan Marley in 1996 and their child YG Marley made his music debut earlier this year with his chart topping "Praise Jah in the Moonlight".
