Rawalpindi Commissioner Engineer Aamir Khattak has expressed deep concern over the deplorable condition of bus terminals within the Rawalpindi region. In response, he has issued stringent directives to all deputy commissioners to conduct thorough inspections of public transportation services ahead of Eidul Azha.
The commissioner has emphasised the importance of implementing reduced transport fares across all bus terminals in the city, including the Pirwadhai Bus Terminal.
During a recent meeting of the divisional coordination committee chaired by him, it was underscored that deputy commissioners of Rawalpindi, Attock, Jhelum, Chakwal, and Murree must personally oversee the inspection processes before and during the Eid holidays. They were tasked with ensuring comprehensive arrangements for the public’s convenience at bus stands, terminals, rest areas and petrol pumps with a specific emphasis on maintaining cleanliness in restrooms and prayer areas.
Khattak has further mandated the provision of clean drinking water for passengers and has prohibited the sale of substandard or expired food and beverages at tuckshops.
Additionally, he has directed authorities to prominently display fare rates within vehicles and to take strict action against overloading and other traffic violations. The installation of illegal LPG cylinders in public and commercial vehicles will also be rigorously monitored, with the assistance of traffic police and the secretary of the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) ensuring the validity of vehicle fitness certificates.
Stringent measures will be enforced to prevent passengers from sitting on vehicle roofs, with continuous speed monitoring to enhance passenger safety. Detailed reports on the status of bus terminals across all districts will be submitted by respective deputy commissioners to the commissioner’s office for further review and action.
