Dolly Parton recently revealed that she was pleasantly surprised by Beyoncé's updated lyrics to "Jolene" on her album Cowboy Carter.

While Parton knew Beyoncé was covering her 1973 country hit, she didn't expect the Grammy-winner to put her own spin on the song.

"Well, I think it was very bold of her," Parton told E! News. "When they said she was gonna do 'Jolene,' I expected it to be my regular one, but it wasn't. But I love what she did to it."

Parton, a legendary songwriter herself, expressed her appreciation for artists who cover her songs, regardless of how they choose to interpret them. She provided an introduction for Beyoncé's version of "Jolene," humorously referencing the titular character.

Beyoncé's version of "Jolene" features updated lyrics, showcasing a more confident and assertive perspective. Instead of pleading with Jolene not to take her man, Beyoncé warns her not to even try. Parton praised the bold new lyrics, highlighting the difference in approach compared to her original version.

"She wasn't gonna go beg some other woman like I did," Parton said. "'Don't steal my man.' S---, get out here, bitch. You ain't stealin' mine."

Parton has consistently expressed her admiration for Beyoncé's rendition of "Jolene," previously celebrating its release on X and congratulating the singer for hitting No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Chart with another track.

This unexpected collaboration between two music icons showcases the enduring power and versatility of Parton's songwriting, while also highlighting Beyoncé's unique ability to reimagine and reinvent classic tracks.
