Morgan Spurlock, the Oscar-nominated filmmaker known for the groundbreaking documentary ‘Super Size Me,’ has passed away at the age of 53 following a private battle with cancer.
According to a family statement cited by Deadline Hollywood, Spurlock died peacefully in New York surrounded by loved ones, with complications of cancer being cited as the cause.
Spurlock's brother, Craig Spurlock, expressed the family's grief, highlighting Morgan's artistic contributions and describing him as a "true creative genius."
Spurlock rose to prominence with Super Size Me, where he documented the health impacts of a fast-food diet by consuming only McDonald's for 30 days.
The film's success propelled Spurlock into the ranks of nonfiction filmmaking, but his career faced setbacks amidst the MeToo movement in 2017 due to a confession of sexual misconduct.
Despite this, his work, including ‘Mansome’ and ‘The Greatest Movie Ever Sold,’ delved into various societal issues, showcasing his versatility.
Plans for a memorial service will be announced, with the family suggesting donations to the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge in New York City in Spurlock's honor.
