Supermodel Bella Hadid used fashion to make a powerful political statement at the Cannes Film Festival, wearing a vintage dress reminiscent of the iconic keffiyeh scarf, a symbol of Palestinian solidarity.
The red and white chequered dress, with its distinctive fringe, echoed the traditional Palestinian headscarf. Hadid paired it with red Gucci mules, gold hoops, and rectangular sunglasses, creating a chic yet meaningful ensemble.
Taking to Instagram, Hadid acknowledged the significance of her outfit choice, writing, "Free Palestine forever," alongside an emoji of the Palestinian flag. She credited designers Michael Sears and Hushi Mortezaie of Michael and Hushi for the original 2001 design.
Hadid's advocacy for Palestine is not new. Since the recent Israeli offensive in Gaza, which has tragically resulted in thousands of deaths, she has consistently voiced her support for the Palestinian people.
The model's father, Mohamed Hadid, was born in Nazareth and has spoken about his family's displacement during the Arab-Israeli War of 1948. Hadid's heritage has undoubtedly influenced her activism and unwavering support for Palestinian rights.
While acknowledging the suffering on both sides of the conflict, Hadid has emphasised the importance of protecting innocent lives and ensuring the safe return of displaced individuals, regardless of their nationality.
