LAHORE:

The Lahore General Hospital (LGH) has inaugurated a Department of Nutrition to educate the public on the benefits of a balanced diet and provide guidance on healthy eating habits.

The establishment of the department was announced by LGH Medical Superintendent Dr Faryad Hussain.

Dr Kashif Aziz will oversee the operations of the department, which will include 11 consultants from various medical fields.

The consultants will offer advice on healthy eating and nutritious foods to patients and their families visiting the hospital along with educating them on the risks associated with consuming junk food and unhealthy diet.

Dr Al-Fareed Zafar emphasised the importance of counseling facilities alongside medical treatment, highlighting the role of the Nutrition Department in disease prevention.

He emphasised that improving dietary habits can help people avoid illnesses, thereby saving time and resources on treatment.

Dr Faryad Hussain outlined the department's plans to develop balanced diet charts for patients and offer guidance on their use. Additionally, parents will receive advice on improving the health of underweight and malnourished children.

Dr Kashif Aziz and Dr Muhammad Maqsood emphasised the prevalence of low-nutrient diets leading to various health issues, including diabetes, hypertension, heart disease and obesity.

They stressed the importance of consuming a balanced diet in appropriate quantities, noting that nutrition charts tailored to individual patients will aid in their recovery.
