Tony McNamara, known for his sharp wit and incisive screenwriting, is on board to pen the script, drawing from the original novel by Warren Adler.

"The Roses" tells the tale of Theo played by Cumberbatch and Ivy played by Colman, a couple who appear to have it all: thriving careers, a loving family, and a passionate relationship. However, beneath the surface of their seemingly idyllic life lies a volatile mix of competitiveness and resentment, which explodes when Theo's career ambitions are suddenly derailed.

Matthew Greenfield, president of Searchlight, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, "‘The Roses’ is a wildly funny, bigger than life, and yet deeply human story. With Jay at the helm and Benedict, Olivia and Tony, we have a dream team bringing it to life."

Cumberbatch's production company, SunnyMarch, will produce the film alongside Leah Clarke and Adam Ackland, who have been working to develop the project since 2017.

Olivia Colman will also serve as a producer under her South of the River banner, collaborating with Ed Sinclair and Tom Carver, in addition to Roach and Michelle Graham.

The original "The War of the Roses," directed by Danny DeVito and starring Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner, was released by 20th Century Fox. It received critical acclaim, securing a BAFTA and three Golden Globe nominations, including for best motion picture.
