Writer Sally Rooney and climate activist Greta Thunberg are among more than 130 public figures who have voiced support for Palestine Action ahead of a crucial court hearing in the United Kingdom.

The group of academics, artists, and activists signed a public declaration backing Palestine Action, a direct-action protest group, just days before an appeal hearing scheduled for April 28 and 29. The UK Court of Appeal is set to review the government’s attempt to uphold its ban on the organization under terrorism laws.

The statement, which has drawn international attention, also includes notable figures such as philosopher Judith Butler. It comes amid ongoing legal and political debate over whether the ban on Palestine Action is lawful, following an earlier High Court ruling that deemed the proscription unlawful, though it remains in effect pending appeal.

Palestine Action has been at the center of controversy in the UK due to its protest tactics targeting companies linked to arms manufacturing and Israel. Supporters argue the group represents legitimate political protest, while critics, including the government, have justified restrictions under counterterrorism measures.

Rooney and Thunberg have both previously faced consequences tied to their support for the group. Rooney has expressed concerns about potential legal risks affecting her work in the UK, while Thunberg was arrested in late 2025 during a demonstration linked to Palestine Action supporters.

The upcoming appeal is expected to be a pivotal moment in determining the future of the ban, as well as broader questions around protest, free speech, and the use of terrorism legislation in the UK.
