Confirmation of Pirates of the Caribbean reboot sparks rumours of Johnny Depp's return to franchise

Johnny Depp's involvement is unclear due to his legal battle with Amber Heard.

"Pirates of the Caribbean" producer Jerry Bruckheimer has confirmed that the beloved Disney franchise is getting a reboot, abandoning past projects including a Margot Robbie-led film.

When asked about Tom Cruise's "Top Gun," Bruckheimer said, "It's hard to tell... You don't know how they come together. You just don't know... But we're gonna reboot 'Pirates,' so that is easier to put together because you don't have to wait for certain actors."

The last "Pirates" film, "Dead Men Tell No Tales" was released in 2017.

A female-led "Pirates" project starring Margot Robbie has been shelved. Bruckheimer clarified that Robbie's project isn't dead, but Disney is focusing on another "Pirates" script.

It's unclear if the reboot will include Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow, as Depp's Hollywood standing remains uncertain following his libel trial against Amber Heard.

Bruckheimer previously told The Sunday Times, "Not at this point...The future is yet to be decided" regarding Depp's potential return. The "Pirates" franchise has been a box office juggernaut, with each film grossing over $650 million globally.
