Passengers block highway to protest transporters’ ‘excesses’

Demand Sindh Transport and the district administration to take action against overcharging by public transporters

The transporters have yet to reduce the fares, despite cut in petrol and diesel rates, and to rub salt on the commuters wounds, are charging extra for the holiday season for all routes in Sindh.

Commuters on Sunday blocked the Indus Highway in Jamshoro to protest against excess fares charged by the transporters.

All public transport was blocked on both sides of the Indus Highway for hours due to the protest of the passengers.

They demanded of the Sindh Transport and the district administration to take action against overcharging by public transporters. They dispersed peacefully after few hours. Meanwhile, on the directives of Deputy Commissioner Hyderabad Tariq Qureshi, RTA Secretary Hyderabad Region Salim Memon continued crackdown for third consecutive day on Sunday against the transporters charging extra fare from passengers in Hyderabad.

Secretary Salim Memon, while taking action on the third day, stopped 45 passenger vehicles coming from Karachi to Hyderabad and inquired about the fare charged from the passengers. Fines worth Rs11,000 were imposed on the transporters who charged extra fares from the passengers, while Rs73,000 were returned to the passengers.

On this occasion, RTA Secretary Salim Memon said in his statement that some transporters are charging Rs1,000 as fare from the public on the holiday due to which strict action has been taken and the excess fare has been returned to the passengers.
