‘Jamaal Jamaloo’: The Iranian inspiration behind Bobby Deol's viral entry track in 'Animal'

The catchy entrance song from the controversial blockbuster has taken the internet by storm

As Animal continues to chart a mega-blockbuster trajectory, social media feeds are populated by divided takes about the Sandeep Reddy Vanga directorial’s depiction of violence and women. However, critics and proponents appear to have agreed upon one redeeming quality from the film’s controversial inventory.

Days after the film's release, enthusiasts flooded social media platforms to share and rave about Bobby Deol's character's entrance, featuring energetic dance moves to the catchy tune of Jamal Kudu. However, the viral track is not solely Animal’s offering, as per Hindustan Times.

The infectious beats of Jamal Kudu find their roots in the well-loved Iranian melody Jamaal Jamaloo, skillfully adapted for the film by music composer Harshvardhan Rameshwar. This musical transformation draws inspiration from a poem of the same name penned by Iranian poet Bijan Smandar.

Originally performed by the Shirazi Choir of the Kharazemi Girls High School in the 1950s, this enchanting composition has transcended time, evolving into a beloved wedding song cherished by audiences over the years. As per an online translation of the song, the lyrics read, “Oh my black-eyed beauty, don't play with my heart; You are leaving, embarking on a journey; And I'm getting crazy; Oh my love, my beloved.”

The film's creators have now unveiled the complete version of the song amassing an impressive 27 million views on YouTube within just four days of its release. Animal, featuring Ranbir Kapoor, the son of late superstar Rishi Kapoor, hit the screens on December 1 and despite facing initial criticism on social media, managed to open to packed theatres.

According to multiple Indian media reports, a sequel tentatively titled Animal Park seems to be under consideration already. As per Vanga, the subsequent narrative will not only be more intense and darker but also grander in scale, assuring audiences that the sequel will surpass its predecessor in every aspect.

The film's climax left audiences on the edge of their seats, tantalising them with the prospect of Animal Park and the emergence of even more formidable characters alongside Ranbir's compelling portrayal. Furthermore, with Animal already raking in impressive numbers at the box office, the path appears to be clear for the director to unfold Animal Park, thus expanding upon the cinematic universe he has carefully crafted.
