SC resolves 1,419 cases in CJP Isa’s first month

Senior puisne judge Justice Sardar Tariq Masood takes the lion’s share of decided cases

The Supreme Court under Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa sped up the disposal of cases, deciding 1,419 pending cases in the first month, according to the court data, with senior puisne judge, Justice Sardar Tariq Masood taking the lion’s share of the decided cases.

Qazi Faez Isa took oath as the chief justice on September 17, 2023 and Sardar Masood became the puisne judge.

Chief Justice Isa, the apex court benches, comprising different judges started hearing cases from September 18.

During the period between Sept 18 and Oct 20, the benches led by Justice Masood decided 600. According to the data, it decided 88 cases in the week starting from Sept 18; 126 cases in the week from Sept 25; 105 in the week from Oct 2, 81 cases from Oct 9 and 200 cases from October 19.

In all, during the five weeks period, the other benches of the apex court disposed of 819 cases.

Shortly after assuming office, the top judge had along with Justice Masood held a meeting with representatives of the Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) and Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) to discuss the apex court’s disposal rate.

After consulting with both the lawyers’ bodies, CJP Isa decided to issue a monthly proposed cause list. It was learnt that CJP Isa had decided to implement the case management policy proposed by Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah and Justice Munib Akhtar.

The top judge also held a meeting with all senior law officers to seek suggestions for improving the efficiency and working of the Supreme Court.
