Digital transformation

Rawalpindi police's digitalisation spans registration of FIRs, case investigations, challans, court hearings

October 30, 2023

In a groundbreaking development, Rawalpindi’s police force has witnessed a paradigm shift in its approach to criminal investigations due to the pioneering efforts of Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Zunaira Azfar. This remarkable transformation, driven by the integration of modern technology, has not only redefined the investigative process but also set new standards for efficiency and accountability. This all-encompassing digitalisation spans the registration of First Information Reports (FIRs), case investigations, evidence and witness documentation, challan preparation and court hearings.

As a result, Rawalpindi police have achieved a remarkable milestone, successfully submitting complete challans for 16,000 cases in the first 10 months of 2023. Many countries have partially or fully digitised their police systems to enhance the efficiency of law enforcement. The online database allows police officers to conduct research, cross-reference and retrieve information swiftly, thereby accelerating the investigative process and reducing resource requirements. Digitised systems also decrease the probability of malpractices and corruption within law enforcement departments. Rawalpindi police have successfully concluded the investigation of 9,000 cases of serious nature including murder, rape and robbery. This is particularly noteworthy in light of the ongoing challenges faced by several regions of the country with regard to deteriorating law and order situation.

SSP Azfar’s feat should encourage other district and provincial police forces to integrate digitalisation into their policing practices. Significantly, SSP Azfar’s accomplishment will act as a source of inspiration for female police officers across the country. It also highlights the need to appoint and promote more female officers to enhance gender equality within the police force. Integrating modern technology, fostering accountability and promoting gender equality within law enforcement is the path forward, and it’s crucial for all police departments to acknowledge this without delay.
