KARACHI:

The port city saw no respite in the street crimes, theft and snatching of vehicles and motorcycles and incidents of murder and looting in September as well.

Worst hit were the people commuting on motorcycles, as during the past month, more than 5,000 two-wheelers were either stolen or snatched at gunpoint.

The new Sindh IG Rafat Mukhtar Raja took charge of his post on August 11, while on September 6, Karachi Police Chief Khadim Hussain Rind took charge of his post. Subsequently, Zonal DIGs, District SSPs and SHOs and SDPOs of all police stations in the city were changed in the name of merit.

However, despite the change of faces, the crime graph kept going up. Meanwhile, citizens were deprived of vehicles and motorcycles worth millions of rupees. In the performance reports presented by senior police officers in meetings with their subordinate officers, the law and order situation in the city is said to be very peaceful and ideal, but the facts on the ground are the opposite.

According to the data of CPLC, citizens were deprived of 207 vehicles worth millions of rupees in the last month of September. Of these, 15 were snatched at gunpoint and 192 were stolen.

Similarly, during the 30 days of September, citizens were deprived of a total of 5,399 motorcycles. Of these 730 motorcycles were snatched at gunpoint and 4,669 motorcycles were stolen. Similarly, during the 30 days of the previous month, 2464 mobile phones worth millions of rupees were taken away from the citizens during street crimes in different areas of the city. A total of 62 people were killed during the massacre in the city, while one case of kidnapping for ransom and two cases of extortion were reported in the city.
