PMDC submits application for WFME recognition

Accreditation programme will enable graduates of licensed colleges to train and work in the USA

ISLAMABAD:

The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) has taken a significant step towards international recognition by applying to the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) for its accreditation program. With the enactment of the PM&DC Act 2022, obtaining WFME recognition became a priority for the council.

To meet the requirements for WFME accreditation, President PM&DC Prof Dr. Rizwan Taj formed a dedicated WFME accreditation cell comprising experts from across Pakistan. Numerous meetings were conducted to thoroughly deliberate and fulfill all the necessary criteria for the WFME application. In addition, nationwide workshops were organized, with the participation of around 124 colleges, to further facilitate the process.

The PMDC engaged a panel of experts from various regions of the country to assist with the WFME accreditation process.

Following an assessment of the PMDC's application, WFME has approved its eligibility for recognition. The next step involves coordinating with WFME to schedule a visit by assessors from the international body. These assessors will conduct a comprehensive site visit to Pakistan, inspecting the PMDC and its entire regulatory systems.

During the visit, the team will evaluate the complete accreditation process of medical colleges overseen by the PMDC. The entire process, including physical site assessments and inspections, is expected to be completed within 12 months before 2024.

Once recognized by WFME, the PMDC's accreditation program will allow graduates of these colleges, licensed by the PMDC, to pursue training and work opportunities in the United States and internationally without any restrictions.

President PMDC, Prof Dr. Rizwan Taj, emphasized that the council has been diligently working to meet mandatory requirements and establish standards that align not only with WFME's guidelines but also with international best practices. This endeavor aims to ensure continuous improvement and internationally recognized quality in medical education while ensuring the global recognition of Pakistani medical education and doctors.

Prof Dr. Rizwan Taj described this achievement as a significant milestone resulting from the relentless efforts of the PMDC. The federal health minister also commended the council's endeavors in this regard.
