Heavy pre-monsoon showers lash Lahore

Drainage work underway as stagnant water collects on low-lying areas, highways

Rainfall lashed Lahore on Monday breaking the ongoing heat spell and leading to stagnant water collecting in low-lying areas and partial flooding on the highway.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), scattered rainfall and thundershowers are expected to hit various parts of the country till June 30.

The pre-monsoon showers that hit the city today broke the rain record for this year, thus far. The highest amount of rainfall was recorded near Lakshmi Chowk at 256mm and the Airport area at 260mm. Around 254mm rainfall was recorded at Paniwala Talab, 252mm at Qurtuba Chowk, 238mm at Gulshan Ravi, 125mm at Samanabad, 212mm at Iqbal Town, 231 at Nishtar Town and 192mm at Tajpura.

Meanwhile, Jail Road and its surrounding areas received 120mm of rain, Gulberg 105mm, Johar Town 135mm and Nakhud Chowk received 90mm.

Although rain brought a respite from the sweltering sun, citizens were inconvenienced and regular traffic was disturbed due to stagnant water gathered on various thoroughfares.

Lahore Deputy Commissioner Rafia Haider and Local Government Minister Amir Mir directed relevant departments, including the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA), to ensure speedy drainage of rainwater.

WASA Managing Director Ghuffran Ahmed and his operational staff were reportedly on the ground supervising drainage work and visited different areas including Qurtuba Chowk, Lakshmi Chowk and various underpasses to inspect.

WASA teams could be seen at emergency sites, ensuring drainage work along with heavy machinery and equipment.
