KARACHI:

There is the potential for rain and thunderstorm in the city on Friday due to the new system of westerly winds, while the wind speed is expected to be higher than usual. Although the present heat wave is predicted to subside by Thursday, rain may extend to coastal areas. Thunderstorm clouds are forming over the sea close to Pakistan due to a circulation in the Iran/Oman area.

A new powerful western system will hit Balochistan on April 27; as a result, there may be thundershowers in Karachi on April 28, weather analyst Chief Meteorologist Karachi Sardar Sarfraz stated. Many Balochistan districts are also anticipated to see significant rainfall.

Other cities throughout the country will also see moderate to severe rainfall as a result of the western system, said Sardar Sarfaraz added that the recent heat wave in Karachi may last until Wednesday (today).

On Thursday, when the impacts of the northwestern winds in Balochistan end, the weather is expected to gradually become better and the mercury will drop.

Coastal areas may experience localised cloud formation on April 28 due to the intense and protracted westerly rain system, according to non-government meteorological analyst Jawad Memon. The said system may be in place until May 7.

According to Jawad Memon, there is a possibility of good rain in the coastal regions of Sindh and Balochistan since circulation has also developed in the Arabian Sea near Iran. Heavy downpours and hailstorms may occur in several areas of various Sindh districts.

Meanwhile, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has issued precautionary measures at the Jinnah Terminal in view of the rain and windstorm forecast.

CAA’s Airside Department has alerted the concerned institutions to prepare for any situation arising from the expected rains at the Karachi airport.

As per the CAA instructions, light-weight aircraft should be moved to safe places in hangers. Any equipment which could cause collision on the runways or the tarmac should also be shifted to safe places.
