RAWALPINDI:

The Rawalpindi Cantonment Board has decided to award the contract for the cattle market in the garrison city well before Eidul Azha to avoid the spread of viral diseases and tackle cleanliness issues. Sources said early bidding and auctioning would also address the issue of buying and selling sacrificial animals on streets and roadsides. This year, the terms of the agreement have been tightened and taxes and parking charges have significantly been raised.

This year's open auction for sacrificial animals will take place on May 16.

Sources said a cattle market will be established at Bhata Chowk at the intersection of the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad.

The entry fee for a large animal at the market would be Rs3,000 under the new regulations, while the entry fee tax for a small animal will be Rs2,000. Market stalls for the selling of animals would cost Rs150 per square yard. The parking fee for buyers' cars in the market will be Rs100 and for motorcycles, the fee has been fixed at Rs50.

Taxes will also be applied to vehicles that are transporting straw and hay for market animals.
