Rejoice, 'Twilight' fans: New television series reportedly in the works
The popular Twilight Saga book series, penned by Stephenie Meyer, is reportedly in the early stages of development for a television adaptation. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lionsgate Television is spearheading the project and has tapped Sinead Daly, known for her work on The Walking Dead: World Beyond and Raised by Wolves, to write the script. The network is said to be considering various approaches for the adaptation, including a remake of the original series or a new offshoot storyline.
The details of the television adaptation are currently under wraps, and there is no word yet on which network or platform will pick up the series. Meyer is expected to be involved in the project, along with producers Wyck Godfrey and Erik Feig, who were also behind the successful film franchise that grossed over $3.4 billion worldwide. The TV adaptation is being developed in-house by Lionsgate, who will shop the project to potential buyers once it's fully developed.
The Twilight Saga is a valuable property in Lionsgate's library, and CEO Jon Feltheimer previously mentioned that there are apparently more stories to be told from the franchise. The news of the television adaptation also comes as Lionsgate negotiates with multiple bidders to potentially spin off its studio business and premium cable network Starz by the end of September 2023.
The Twilight series follows the story of Bella Swan, a human teenager who falls in love with the vampire Edward Cullen. Chaos ensues, as she realizes that getting tangled up with vampires may come at the cost of her and her loved ones’ safety. There is also a love triangle thrown in for good measure, with Swan’s werewolf best friend, Jacob Black, eventually confessing his feelings for her as well.
The series became a cultural phenomenon and led to a successful film franchise starring Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner. The first film premiered in 2008, with the final instalment released in 2012.
