ECP announces schedule for local bodies’ by-polls

Polling will be held on April 18, results on April 20

The Election Commission of Pakistan has issued the schedule of by-election of local bodies for 93 seats of different categories in Sindh, including the 11 seats in Karachi where elections were not held due to the death of contestants.

According to a notification of ECP, candidates can submit nomination papers till March 22, the polling will be held on April 18.

The by-elections will be held for 93 seats of different categories in 26 districts of Sindh including Karachi division. Poling will be held for 28 seats of union council chairman and vice chairman in various districts of Sindh and 11 in Karachi and 61 general councilor seats.

According to the Election Commission, nomination papers can be submitted for these seats from March 20 to 22. Nomination forms will be scrutinized till March 28.

Candidates will be able to withdraw nomination papers on April 6. Election signs will be allotted on April 7, while polling will be held on April 18 and the results will be announced on April 20.

JI calls off sit-ins against ECP

Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi Ameer Engineer Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman called off planned sit-ins in 10 major arteries of the city at the last minute after the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) announced the schedule for the local government elections in the remaining 11 union councils in the city.

The JI had announced sit-ins to demand a schedule for the polls in the remaining union councils on Friday evening, but the ECP fulfilled their demand hours before the scheduled time for the sit-ins. Consequently, Hafiz Naeem announced the cancellation of the demonstration during a press conference at JI headquarters.
