KARACHI:

Sindh Minister for Women Development Shehla Raza has said that women will have to fight for their own protection. "Law is a weapon that you can use in times of trouble. The society should know when and how to use this weapon," she said at the 4th Women's Conference which opened at the Arts Council of Pakistan (ACP) with a "drum-circle" performance on Friday.

ACP President Ahmad Shah said that women have to realise that begging would not get them anything. "They will have to struggle for their rights. Fatima Jinnah and Benazir Bhutto should be their role models," he added.

Key note speaker and well-known writer Noorul Huda Shah said: "We keep our women oblivious to the world. She does not know what the outside world is."

Shah further talked about the mindset that denies women their rights. "A feudal lord is not someone who owns a lot of land and property. It is a mindset," she said.

Another keynote speaker Dr Jafar Ahmed spoke on "Global Feminist Movement: An Overview" at a session moderated by artist Huma Mir.
