RAWALPINDI:

A senior civil judge has taken strict notice of reports of brutal torture on a murder suspect confined in Adiala Jail.

The judge while ordering an immediate medical check-up of the accused, summoned the jail superintendent along with an explanation by issuing him a notice for March 11.

A petition was filed by Advocate Hamza Abbasi, the library secretary of the Rawalpindi’s District Bar Association in which it was argued that accused Shujaat son of Riyasat has been locked up in Adiala Jail for two years.

The petition claimed that on the instructions of the deputy jail superintendent, the jail employees including wardens Malik Tasaduq, Waqar, Ejaz and Ramzan, in collusion with the complainant party, tortured the accused with belts and sticks due to which he sustained head injuries.

“There are marks of violence on his whole body including legs and back,” it said and added following the torture, the accused was confined in a separate cell where he is given one meal a day.

The petitioner claimed that the jail administration was also harassing and threatening the accused that he would be shifted to another district.

Sources said the torture marks were shown to the court, at which the court took strict notice and ordered an immediate medical examination of the accused.

Besides, the court also sought a reply along with an explanation from the jail administration.

Four other prisoners have also been requested to be summoned as witnesses to testify and confirm the torture, the sources added.

The next hearing of the case will be held on March 11.
