Court restores Murree’s district status

One week after the Punjab caretaker government withdrew the status of Murree as a district, Lahore High Court Rawalpindi bench judge Justice Tanvir Sultan suspended the caretaker government’s notification and restored it as the district.
The judge also issued directives to treat Murree as a district with the allocation of funds and resources.
The court also issued notices to the Punjab caretaker chief minister, the chief secretary, and local government secretary and sought their replies as under what law the caretaker government abolished the district status of Murree.
Pakistan People’s Party NA-57 candidate Raja Shaukat Ali Abbasi, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf former MNA Sadaqat Ali Abbasi, Anjuman-e-Tajran Murree and others had filed a writ petition challenging the caretaker government’s notification of February 15, relegating Murree as a tehsil.
The court suspended the notification and restored the status of Murree as a district.
After the verdict, the petitioners said that the court suspended the caretaker government’s notification because it had no mandate to do so.
