High-breed animals’ population dwindling, says Dr Marri

Artificial insemination termed the way forward in improving milk, meat yield

The population of high-breed cattle is dwindling in Sindh. It is the responsibility of experts to save these animals, Sindh Agricultural University Pro Vice Chancellor Dr Jaan Muhammad Marri, said on Sunday. "Production of milk and meat can be increased through artificial insemination of high-breed buffaloes and cows."

Dr Marri was speaking at the closing ceremony of a five-day training workshop on seeding in cattle organized by the Department of Animal Reproduction, Sindh Agricultural University, in collaboration with the National Center for Livestock Breeding, Genetics and Genomics and Pir Maher Ali Shah Arid Agriculture University.

He further said that in ancient times, the seeds of high-breed animals were managed by indigenous methods, but now with the help of modern technology, artificial seeds are being maintained, so that high breeds can be preserved. "The shortage of meat and milk in the country can be met through this technology," he added.

While speaking at the workshop, Prof Dr Ghayasuddin Shah Rashidi, Dean of Faculty of Veterinary and Husbandry Sciences, said that alternative sources of food can be increased with the help of livestock to meet the ever-increasing food requirement in our food-insecure country.
